What Is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a manual exfoliation treatment where I use a sterile, surgical-grade blade held at a 45-degree angle to gently scrape away the top layer of dead skin cells and fine facial hair (often called "peach fuzz"). It's a non-invasive, non-chemical way to reveal smoother, brighter skin underneath.
In my studio, I think of it as a deep physical exfoliation—similar to what a pumice stone does for your feet, but much more precise and effective for the delicate facial skin. The treatment itself is quick, usually 30 minutes, and there's no downtime. You walk out with immediately visible results.
The Benefits You'll Actually Notice
- Instant smoothness and radiance: Removing that layer of dead skin reveals fresh, glowing skin right away. Clients often say their makeup applies better afterward.
- Better product absorption: When dead skin isn't blocking the way, your serums and moisturizers penetrate more effectively.
- Softer facial hair: The fine, light hairs on your face—the ones that can trap oil and makeup—are removed painlessly. Contrary to the old myth, they don't grow back thicker or darker.
- A prepping treatment: If you have a special event coming up, dermaplaning is my go-to recommendation 24–48 hours before. Your skin looks and feels its absolute best.
- Works with other treatments: Dermaplaning pairs beautifully with hydrating facials or as prep before a chemical peel.
Who Benefits Most from Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is safe for most skin types, but it's especially effective if you:
- Have dry, dull, or textured skin that needs a refresh
- Struggle with congestion or clogged pores
- Wear a lot of makeup and want better application
- Have peach fuzz that bothers you (functionally or aesthetically)
- Are looking for a non-invasive way to prep skin before other treatments
A note: If you have active acne, open wounds, recent sunburn, or very sensitive skin, this isn't the right choice right now. I always recommend a quick consultation so I can assess your skin and suggest the best treatment for you.
What to Expect: Before, During, and After
During the Treatment
You'll relax while I use short, gentle strokes with the blade. There's no pain—most clients describe it as a mild, pleasant scraping sensation. You might see visible skin flakes coming off (that's normal and actually satisfying to watch!). The whole experience is soothing, not traumatic.
Immediately After
Your skin will look and feel noticeably smoother and brighter. There's no bleeding or raw feeling—just healthy, exfoliated skin. Your face might feel a bit sensitive, so I always apply a calming serum and moisturizer before you leave.
The Next Few Days
This is where aftercare matters. Here's what I tell my clients:
- Protect from the sun: Your new skin is more vulnerable to UV damage. Wear SPF 30 or higher daily for at least a week.
- Keep it hydrated: Use gentle, nourishing products. Skip active ingredients like vitamin C, retinol, or acids for 48 hours.
- Avoid intense exercise or heat: Sweat and friction can irritate freshly exfoliated skin, so skip hot yoga or the sauna for a day or two.
- Don't over-exfoliate: Dermaplaning counts as your exfoliation for the week. Skip your usual scrubs or chemical exfoliants for 5–7 days.
- Be gentle: Avoid touching your face unnecessarily, and use a soft cleansing cloth if you need to wash.
Most clients see results peak around day 2–3, when the skin looks its brightest and feels its smoothest.
How Often Should You Do It?
I recommend dermaplaning every 3–4 weeks. Your skin naturally sheds dead cells on that cycle, so spacing treatments out prevents over-exfoliation while keeping that glow going year-round. Some clients come in monthly before events; others prefer quarterly maintenance. It depends on your skin's needs and your goals.
If you're curious whether dermaplaning is right for your skin, I'd love to chat during a quick consultation at Beauty Beyond Studios. We can look at your skin texture and concerns together and make sure you're set up for the best results.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will dermaplaning make my facial hair grow back thicker?
No. This is a common myth, but it's not true. The hair that grows back will be the same color and thickness as before—you're just removing it at skin level, not changing the hair follicle underneath.
Is dermaplaning safe for sensitive skin?
Dermaplaning is generally gentle, but if your skin is very reactive, acne-prone, or sunburned, it's best to wait. A quick consultation helps determine if it's the right timing for you.
Can I get dermaplaning if I'm on retinol or other actives?
I recommend pausing actives 3–5 days before your appointment and waiting 48 hours after to resume them. This prevents irritation and lets your skin settle after exfoliation.
How long do results last?
You'll see immediate brightness and smoothness. The glow typically lasts 2–3 weeks, which is why many clients come back every 3–4 weeks to maintain that fresh, polished look.
