Prepare Your Skin (and Mind) Beforehand
A question I get weekly is, "Should I do anything special before my appointment?" The answer is yes—a little prep goes a long way.
First, come with clean skin. You don't need makeup or heavy moisturizer; in fact, arrive bare-faced if you can. If you're coming straight from work or the gym, a gentle rinse is perfect. Skip any active treatments—vitamin C serums, retinol, acids—for 24 hours before your appointment. Your skin will be more receptive to the facial itself, and we avoid any irritation overlap.
Second, avoid sun exposure the day of your appointment. A fresh facial makes your skin temporarily more sensitive, and you want to protect that fresh canvas.
Finally, communicate openly about your skin concerns. Before you arrive, jot down what matters most: acne, sensitivity, dryness, texture, or just general maintenance. In my studio, I often see clients hesitate to mention concerns during the consultation—don't. The more you tell me, the more I can customize the treatment to actually address your goals.
Be an Active Participant During Your Facial
Your esthetician isn't a mind reader. During your facial, speak up if something feels uncomfortable—too hot water, too much pressure, a product causing sensitivity—and let me know if something feels amazing so I can focus there. Your feedback helps me deliver the best experience and gives you confidence in future visits.
Use the 45–60 minutes to genuinely relax. Many clients in my Federal Way studio use this time to turn off their phone and breathe. That's part of the benefit: facials are as much about calming your nervous system as they are about exfoliating dead skin. You deserve that peace.
Don't hesitate to ask questions about what products I'm using and why. A good esthetician will explain each step—whether we're using a hydrating mask, chemical exfoliant, or targeted serum—and why it matters for your skin type. This knowledge helps you build a home routine that works.
Take Home the Right Aftercare Plan
Here's where most people drop the ball: what you do in the 24–48 hours after your facial matters as much as the facial itself.
Your esthetician should give you specific aftercare instructions. Generally, this means:
- Avoid active ingredients (retinol, acids, vitamin C) for at least 24 hours.
- Skip heavy makeup for at least 12 hours if possible.
- Use gentle, hydrating products your esthetician recommends—not something new or harsh.
- Protect from sun with SPF 30+, even if you're indoors. Fresh skin is vulnerable.
- Skip hot showers and intense workouts for 24 hours; your skin is in repair mode.
If your esthetician didn't provide written aftercare, ask for it. A good one will send you home with clarity on what to do next.
Plan Your Follow-Up Routine
A one-time facial is lovely, but results compound with consistency. Most skin types benefit from a facial every 4–6 weeks. Monthly visits are ideal for acne-prone or congested skin; every 6–8 weeks works for dry or sensitive skin that heals more slowly.
Before you leave your first appointment, ask your esthetician what frequency they'd recommend for your specific skin. Then book your next appointment on the spot if you can—it removes friction and keeps you accountable.
Between facials, follow the at-home skincare routine your esthetician suggests. Facials are powerful, but they're one piece of the puzzle. Consistent cleansing, hydration, and sun protection are what turn occasional glow into lasting skin health.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long do results from a facial last?
Most clients see an immediate glow for 24–48 hours, plus improved texture and hydration. Long-term results—clearer, firmer skin—build with regular appointments every 4–6 weeks. Results depend on your skin type, concerns, and home routine.
Will a facial break me out?
Not usually. A mild adjustment period (1–2 pimples) can happen as congestion clears, but a good esthetician will customize the facial to minimize irritation. If breakouts persist, mention it at your next visit so we adjust the approach.
Should I get a facial if I have sensitive skin?
Absolutely—but tell your esthetician first. We have gentler techniques and soothing products perfect for sensitive skin. A patch test before your appointment is always smart if you have a history of reactions.
What's the difference between a basic and advanced facial?
A basic facial typically includes cleanse, exfoliation, extractions, mask, and moisturizer. Advanced facials may add serums, specialized peels, LED light therapy, or microdermabrasion. Your esthetician will recommend what matches your goals and budget.
